A case control study published in March 2022 in Annals of Internal Medicine reveals that receiving the mRNA covid vaccine BNT162b2 made by Pfizer–BioNTech could significantly increase risk of carditis – nine times more cases of myocarditis than cases of pericarditis. Use of the word could is because the study could not establish a causal relation between vaccination and elevated risk of carditis, which is still possible.

In the study conducted by Dr. Francisco Lai and colleagues from University of Hong Kong, a statistical analysis of data from 160 patients with carditis and 2200 patients without also shows that patients aged 12 to 17 years who received BNT162b2 had 17 times higher risk of carditis than those who did not. In adults aged 18 or older, the risk doubled.

The vaccine BNT162b2 increased a greater risk of carditis in males than in females; in males, the risk was increased by 4.68 times while in female by 2.2 times. The increase in the risk of carditis is primarily associated with the administration of the second shot, but not the first one. (Did not count on the booster).

This is not the first to reveal the association between vaccination with BNT162b2 and risk of carditis. A similar study conducted by researchers in Israel and published earlier came to the same conclusion that risk of carditis in patients receiving BNT162b2 is more than triple risk of carditis in those who did not receive the vaccine.  And the risk is greater in adolescents than in adults.  Some case reports published previously also linked cases of carditis to the vaccination with BNT162b2. Another European study also linked mRNA vaccines to elevated risk of carditis.

According to the current study report, symptoms of carditis in the vaccinated patients often manifest within the first 14 days of vaccination. This does not mean that risk disappears after 14 days of vaccination. Researchers of the current study suggested that mRNA vaccine recipients need to watch symptoms of carditis including chest pain, palpitation, short breath and subsequent elevated risk for carditis.

They played down the risk by pointing out that the increase of absolute risk is small. They also cited a report to show that covid 19 infection may increase risk of carditis by 19 times.  They meant to say that while of some concern, the risk is no big deal.

(Note that not all studies are trustworthy including the current one because of potential conflicts of interest or potential influence by the industry.  This study could underestimate the risk increase by vaccination of BNT162b2.  A study from Thailand indicates that mRNA vaccines could cause carditis in 30% of children vaccinated.)

The researchers also said no death or ICU care was associated with vaccination of BNT162b2.  However, this claim is irrelevant because their study was not intended to prove or disprove the link.   In fact,  deaths in vaccinated otherwise healthy individuals have been observed. This study also tried to determine if there is any association between use of CoronaVac (Sinovac) made by a Chinese company, and risk of carditis. Some analyses did reveal some increase in risk in patients receiving this vaccine although the increase is not as great as that from BNT162b2 . The Chinese vaccine, unlike the active mRNA vaccine BNT162b2, is sterilized. But the report says that there is no link between the vaccine and the risk of carditis.

Note that the study was focused on patients with clinically significant symptoms of carditis.  It is unknown how many people may be impacted by mRNA vaccines to develop sub-clinical heart conditions.

These things may help including 1) do not receive more vaccines. 2) avoid violent physical activities and improve your health conditions if you are suffering autoimmune diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease like hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, myositis, and encephalitis, 3) do not use any foods, medications, and lifestyle that can increase risk of carditis or worsen your condition, 4) use supplements such as vitamin C, D, B complex, acetyl cysteine, quercetin, glutathione etc. and healthy natural whole foods such as green leafy vegetables and berries to minimize your systemic inflammation to prevent your condition from getting worse.
