A study published in the Cancer Letters indicates that resveratrol found in red grapes can be a potent treatment for breast cancer.

In vitro research shows that resveratrol increases apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 cells – a breast cancer cell line, and reduce extracellular levels of VEGF.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) stimulates the formation of blood vessels that cells need for cellular growth.

Also in vivo research finds that treatments with resveratrol increases apoptotic index in ERalpha and ER beta in the MDA-MB-231 tumors and decreases angiogenesis and slow breast cancer tumor growth.

The MDA-MB-231 cell line is an epithelial breast cancer cell line that came from a 51-year-old Caucasian women with a metastatic breast cancer. This is one of the most commonly used breast cancer cell lines in medical research.
