Inhaled/Ingested Titanium Dioxide crystals may raise type 2 diabetes risk

A study published in 2018 in Chemical Research in Toxicology suggests that ingested titanium dioxide particles may increase risk of type 2 diabetes in addition to early findings that this material can potentially cause various cancers.

Titanium dioxide is commonly used in foods, cosmetic products and supplements.

The study found particles of titanium dioxide in sizes of 110 plus/minus 70 nm diameter are in a large amount in the pancreas specimen from type 2 diabetes patients. This was not found in non-diabetic pancreas specimen.

This pilot study examined 11 pancreatic specimen with 8 from type 2 diabetes patients and three from non-diabetic individuals. All diabetic pancreas specimen were found to have high amounts of titanium dioxide, but not in non-diabetic specimen.

France is banning use of titanium dioxide in foods as studies have shown that titanium dioxide nanoparticles can damage DNA causing carcinogens in animals.

It has been known for a long time that inhaled nano-particles like titanium dioxide and even silicon dioxide can cause lung cancer, which have been recognized by the World Health Organization as human carcinogens.

Ingested nanoparticles can travel to the brain, liver, lung, pancreas and kidney in addition to potentially other organs.
