And convincing evidence suggests that regular aerobic exercise can also help reduce the risk of many types of cancer.

For example, a meta-analysis of aggregated data shows that higher levels of physical activity and aerobic exercise can significantly reduce the cancer risk of at least 13 specific types of cancer.  For this study, researchers examined the medical history of nearly 1.5 million Americans and Europeans. The results showed that the risk for 13 out of the 26 cancers can be reduced by 10% to 42%.

More aerobic exercise equals more health benefits

A 42% reduction in the cancer risk was observed among subjects who exercised the most.  Exercise types include walking, strolling, jogging, running and other aerobic exercises. Those who did the most showed a 27% reduction in liver cancer risk and a 42% reduction in esophageal cancer risk.

The study was led by Dr. Steven Moore, Master of Public Health, of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and studied data came from a total of 1.4 million patients. In addition to liver and esophageal cancer, regular physical activity was associated with 20 to 26% reduced risk of other cancers including lung cancer, kidney cancer, stomach cancer, endometrial cancer and myeloid leukemia.

The health benefits of easy aerobic exercise should not be underestimated

Also physical exercise was linked to 13 to 17% reduced risk of   myeloma, colon cancer, head and neck cancer, rectal cancer and bladder cancer.   Research results show that people who participated in regular physical exercise had a 10% lower risk of breast cancer.   It has also been found that regular aerobic exercise can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes.   Being physical active also seems to increase life expectancy.
