(DR. LU)

Vitamin D helps breast cancer patients

A study published in 2017 in JAMA Oncology indicates that taking high doses of vitamin D can not only help prevent breast cancer, but also help treat the disease.

Previous studies have linked 17 types of cancers to Vitamin D deficiency and 75% cases of breast cancer could be prevented if patients maintain high serum vitamin D.

The current study was conducted in San Francisco Bay Area and central Valley, California. It was intended to see how vitamin D influences the prognosis of breast cancer patients.

For the study, breast cancer patients were asked to allow a test for blood vitamin D levels with 2 months of diagnosis, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 months after baseline.

Researchers found the lower serum vitamin D (25OHD) levels in women with advanced stage breast cancer.  The lowest level was found in postmenopausal women with triple-negative breast cancer.

In addition, serum vitamin D levels were inversely associated with the risk of disease progression and death.  Compared to the lowest tertile, breast cancer patients in the highest tertile of vitamin D were much more likely to survive.

After adjustment for other factors, the women with high levels of serum vitamin D were found 28% less likely to die, compared to those with lower levels.

The strongest association between vitamin D and death risk from breast cancer and invasive disease was found among postmenopausal women. The risk reduction was up to 63%.
