Cell phone can cause thyroid microcarcinoma
A study published in 2018 in Annals of Epidemiology suggests that exposure to cell phone radiation can cause thyroid microcarcinoma which is thyroid cancer with its size equal to or smaller than 10mm.
This case-control study involved 462 patients with thyroid cancer and 498 controls without thyroid cancer. The study found thyroid cancer was not associated with cell phone use.
However, long term and more frequent use of cell phones was associated with thyroid microcarcinoma risk.
Specifically, subjects who used a cell phone for more than 15 years were 29% more likely to develop thyroid microcarcinoma. Those who used cell phone for more than 2 hours per day were 40% more likely to be diagnosed with thyroid microcarcinoma. Those who had the most cumulative use hours were 58% more likely to develop the tumors.
