Fatty acid kills cancer cells 脂肪酸殺死癌細胞

07/10/2020 Saturday (jkzx.com) — A polyunsaturated fatty acid known as dihomogamma-linolenic acid or DGLA may be used as a drug to treat cancer, according to a study published in the journal Developmental Cell on July 10, 2020.

Dr. Jennifer Watts and colleagues at Washington State University conducted the study and found DGLA can induce ferroptosis in animals, that is, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a microscopic worm, and cultured human cancer cells.

Ferroptosis is a type of cell death discovered recently and it occurs when a large amount of iron promotes lipid peroxidation during the cell death process, which reduces glutathione peroxidase. Then toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulate in large quantity and eventually kill cells.

This discovery can lead to the development of cancer treatments and drugs that can help prevent certain diseases such as kidney disease and neurodegeneration which may be implicated by ferroptosis.

DGLA is found in small quantities in the humans but rarely present in the human diet.

In the study, Watts et al. found nematodes fed a diet of DGLA-laden bacteria had their germ cells and stem cells that make the germ cells killed. Signs indicated that ferroptosis is the way how the cells got killed.

Watts et al. worked with Scott Dixon at Stanford University and found DGLA can also induce ferroptosis and kill cultured cancer cells.
