Selenium May Help Prevent Prostate Cancer

Thursday 20 October 2016 – A study by Naomi E. Allen at the University of Oxford, Oxford, UK and colleagues has found that high long-term selenium intake may help prevent prostate cancer, particularly aggressive prostate cancer.

Observational studies have linked higher blood selenium levels to a lower risk of prostate cancer. The current study found an inverse association between selenium in nails and the risk of prostate cancer.

The study data came from 15 prospective studies in which participants recorded serum or toenail selenium concentrations and prostate cancer status.

Overall, blood selenium was not associated with total prostate cancer risk. However, high levels of blood selenium were associated with a lower risk of aggressive disease, and patients were more likely to die from prostate cancer. The risk can be reduced by 57%.

Nail selenium, which is associated with long-term selenium intake, was found to be associated with a significantly lower risk of total prostate cancer. The risk reduction may be as high as 71%. The risk reduction was more pronounced for invasive disease than for noninvasive disease.

Research suggests that long-term high selenium intake may help prevent aggressive prostate cancer, which is a major concern in this disease.

Note that patients with aggressive prostate cancer may be more likely to take selenium supplements than those with nonaggressive disease. In any case, the association between selenium levels and prostate cancer risk may or may not be causal, meaning that selenium intake may or may not be beneficial.

Selenium is available as a dietary supplement and is often used as an antioxidant. Foods high in selenium include Brazil nuts, tuna, shrimp, sardines, salmon, cod, mushrooms, asparagus and mustard. (David Liu) (This report was published originally on foodconsumer.org)

(David Liu)(This report was published originally on foodconsumer.org)
