Dietary fat raises risk for Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Wednesday Aug 2, 2017 (JKZX.com) — High fat diet is commonly used in the West, which some claim is responsible for Western diseases like heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and cancers such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

A new study published in Nutrition and Cancer this year suggests that eating too much dietary fat particularly animal fat can increase some specific types of lymphoma like non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Previous studies hint high-fat diets are implicated in the etiology of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). But the results were inconsistent.

The study reviewed 221 published cohort and case-control studies and analyzed data from 10 out them only to confirm that the total fat consumption was linked to 26% increased risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Specifically, high fat intake was correlated with 41% increased diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and 21% increased risk for follicular lymphoma and only marginally associated with T cell lymphoma (12%). In contrast, high dietary fat was not associated with small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The study concluded “Total fat consumption, particularly animal fat, increases the risk for NHL (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma)”.

The study was conducted by Tian-Jie Han at Shandong University in China and colleagues. (David Liu)
