Saturday 11/27/2021 (jkzx.com) — Zinc as a nutrient supplement has caught a lot of attention lately because it is believed to play an essential role in preventing and curing Sars Cov 2 infection or covid 19.   But consumers need to know that zinc comes in a form of salt and not all zinc salts are the same.

The commonly used zinc salts include zinc citrate, zinc gluconate, zinc sulfate, zinc glycinate, zinc picolinate, zinc orotate, zinc acetate, and zinc oxide.  Are these all good zinc salts you can use as a supplement?

The first thing you need to consider is, does the zinc salt you are looking at dissolve in water? If not, you can not absorb nor use it.  You should avoid such zinc salt. Unfortunately, not all zinc salts aforementioned have good solubility.  Therefore, some zinc salts are not good as a zinc supplement.

Zinc citrate is only slightly soluble in water.  So it is not a good zinc supplement.  Zinc is used often as a supplement to boost immunity and a large dose is important.  This type of zinc salt is not likely to provide enough useful zinc.

Zinc gluconate solubility in water is 100 grams per liter.  So this zinc salt seems ok.  But the solubility is limited and it cannot dissolve in water freely.

Zinc sulfate is a salt formed with strong acid hydrogen sulfate (H2SO4).  Its solubility in water is 477 grams per liter, which is probably the highest or best you can use as a zinc supplement.

Zinc glycinate solubility in water is 194 grams per liter.  So it is not too bad, but not ideal.

Zinc picolinate is only slightly soluble in water.  So it is not a good zinc supplement.

Zinc orotate solubility in water is 0.635 grams per liter.  Bad.

Zinc acetate water solubility is 439 grams per liter.  One of the best zinc salt you can use as a zinc supplement.  Recommended.

Zinc oxide water solubility is insoluble.  It can slightly dissolve in acidic water.  This salt can be a nanoparticle, which is cytotoxic.  No one should use this type zinc salt as a zinc supplement.  Some manufacturers claimed this zinc can be timely released, which is not the case.  Zinc is often used as an immunity booster which needs to be used in a large quantity.  You cannot afford to do timely releases or slow releases.  Try to avoid it.

When water solubility is considered, the preferred zinc salts should be in the following order of most desired to least desired.

Zinc sulfate (best) > Zinc acetate (second desirable) > Zinc glycinate (fine) > Zinc gluconate (not ideal, but ok).

Some supplement manufacturers may not be forthcoming in terms of the type of zinc salt they use.  They simply say zinc or chelate with rice or amino acids.  Try to avoid those types of zinc also.

Other types of zinc salts need to be avoided because zinc from those zinc salts is not readily available as a zinc nutrient or supplement to your body.  You are going to waste the majority of it.  Use of such undesired zinc salts can only provide you with a false hope.  It can hurt you because you could not get the nutritional value or the efficacy.

Zinc oxide can be a nanoparticle depending on its particulate size.  Zinc oxide nanoparticles like other nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide can cause damage to cells and may cause mutations.  Zinc oxide should by all means be avoided. (Dr. Lu)
