Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, is a potent antioxidant naturally occurring in human body. Studies have found CoQ10 supplementation effective in preventing various health conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It can actually even help negate the effects of NAFLD.

Published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, a study followed 41 subjects with mild to moderate NAFLD.  For the study, researchers from Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in Iran divided the participants into two groups: one group treated with 100 milligrams (mg) of CoQ10 once a day for 12 weeks, and the other was not.

The study showed that subjects receiving the CoQ10 supplement improved their NAFLD conditions while the controls did not. Particularly, CoQ10 supplementation significantly decreased levels of liver aminotransferases, hs-CROP, TNF-a among other things.

Better yet, CoQ10 supplementation also resulted in an increase in adiponectin – a hormone that is linked to weight loss.  The treatment also normalized liver function in four patients.

The researchers suggest that CoQ10 supplements can be used to treat NAFLD.

CoQ10 has been known to reduce risk of heart disease.  Read more here.
