Cell phone radiation can make cancer more aggressive

Long term exposure to cell phone radiation is known to increase risk of certain cancers like glioma – a common brain tumor. Now a new study indicates that exposure to cell phone radiation can also worsen prognosis of cancer patient.

The study examines the effect of cell phone radiation on two human head and neck cancer cell lines, FADU and SCC25. Specifically, researchers wanted to know how the radiation affects angiogenesis, cell invasion and colony formation of head and neck cancer cells.
They also wanted to investigate the impact of the cell phone on the regulation of E‐cadherin and Erk1/Erk2 genes.

They found cell phone radiation promotes angiogenesis and enhances cell invasion and colony formation of human head and neck cancer cells which is accompanied by a down-regulation of E-cadherin expression.

More significantly, the researchers found the cell phone radiation can activate Erk1/Erk2 in our experimental models. Erk1 and Erk2 are involved in tumor development.

The study concluded that “Our investigation reveals that cell‐phone radiofrequency could enhance head and neck cancer by stimulating angiogenesis and cell invasion via Erk1/Erk2 activation.”

It is not a surprise that cell phone radiation can make cancer cells more aggressive. This is like x-ray which can promote cancer development. X-ray can also make cancer cells more aggressive.

For that reason, cancer cells that are treated with radiotherapy often become resistant to radiation treatment. These cells become stem like cancer cells meaning that they are harder to kill and these cancer cells can come back to kill cancer patients.

This is one of the reasons why cancer patients who are initially diagnosed with early staged cancer end up with developing terminal cancer and dying from the terminal cancer.

Cell phone radiation is expected to have a similar impact to x-ray.
