The worst problem for chemotherapy drugs like paclitaxel and docetaxel is that they increase the population of the cancer stem cells (CSC) in patients with breast cancer or other types of cancer make the cancer cells more aggressive. The drugs can also promote breast cancer metastasis as new research showed.

A new study published this year in Cancer Letter confirms that both paclitaxel and docetaxel enrich the cancer stem cell population in triple negative breast cancer cell lines.    CSC is why patients with breast cancer and other types of cancer treated with chemotherapy often cannot have long term survival.

Triple negative breast cancer is nasty and has no effective thermotherapy drugs to treat. The cancer can progress rapidly and post high risk of death and faster relapse, compared to ther types of breast cancer.

The study finds sulforaphanse together with paclitaxel or docetaxel significantly reduced the volume of primary breast cancer tumor and the number of secondary cancer, compared to either treatment alone.

The study also reveals sulforaphane an ingredient found in broccoli and also available as a dietary supplement reversed the action of taxanes (paclitaxel or docetaxel) in TNBS cell lines.

Researchers were able to find sulforaphane inhibits”NF-κB p65 subunit translocation, downregulating p52 and consequent downstream transcriptional activity.” (David Liu)
