Many cancers may be caused by parasites or they are actually the cancer cells. Some cancer patients who take parasite-killing remedies are able to get rid of their cancer, which means that their cancers are indeed at last parasite-related.

A study published in International Journal for Parasitology, Volume 24, Issue 6, September 1994, Pages 833-843 shows that liver fluke infection with Opisthorchis viverrini can cause cholangiocarcinoma which is the cancer of the bile duct epithelium, which is the most severe outcome of liver fluke infection.

The study report says that the infection with the liver fluke is a major public health problem in Northeast Thailand, where approximately 30% of the residents live with the fluke. Most residents in this region are Laos-descendants who enjoy eating raw fish, which can harbor the fluke.

The study review demonstrates a close relationship between the liver fluke infection and the bile duct cancer. The parasite is persistent in the region although praziquantel is commonly used and health education information is disseminated widely through government-sponsored programs.

And data from a cancer registry in the region shows that cancer is very common in individuals who were infected with the liver fluke.

Still another report published in Mutation Research/Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, Volume 305, Issue 2, 1 March 1994, Pages 273-281shows that infection with Schistosoma japonicum (Trematoda) can cause cancer in man and animals.

Early reports have already revealed that Schistosoma haematobium infection can cause bladder cancer while Schistosoma japonicum has been linked to liver cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal cancer.

Researchers in China and Japan conducted epidemiological analyses and found that S. japonicum infection is a risk factor for liver cancer just as hepatitis virus infection and alcohol consumption.
