Trans fat may up dementia risk

Trans fatty acids, or trans fat are used or formed in processed foods and restaurant-served foods. They have been correlated to high risk of heart disease, stroke and heart attack in previous studies. In the United States alone, tran fat is linked to 100,000 heart disease associated deaths.

Now a new study led by researchers from Nakamura-Gakuen University suggests that trans fat may increase risk of dementia, or speed up loss of cognitive functions.

The Japanese study published in the journal Neurology finds older adults who have high serum levels of trans fat are at 52 to 74 percent increased risk of developing dementia.

Trans fat can be present in a processed food or restaurant-served food even though the nutrition label says zero trans fat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows food processors to label a food zero trans fat when the food contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving. Also natural vegetable oils can be transformed to become trans fat after the food is thermally processed.
