Yongxing Xu and colleagues published a review in 2021 in International Urology and Nephrology to suggest that taking Coenzyme Q10 supplements may help patients with chronic kidney disease.

The review is focused on how CoQ10 affects cardiovascular outcomes, oxidative stress, inflammation , cholesterol and glucose metabolism.

Six studies of patients with chronic kidney disease did not render any conclusion on cardiovascular outcomes. However, data showed that CoQ10 did significantly reduce malonaldehyde and high-sensitivity C reactive protein concentrations which indicate that oxidative stress.

Also CoQ10 supplementation was found to significantly improve HbA1c which indicates how well a person control blood sugar in a 3-month period.

Nevertheless, CoQ10 supplements did not seem to have any impact on total cholesterol, or low density lipoprotein cholesterol, or high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides.

CoQ10 has been used to treat many diseases or health conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, cancer, migraine, periodontal disease and statin myopathy among others although the efficacy of this supplementation remains controversial.
