(DR. LU)

Eating nuts lower risk of cardiovascular disease and associated mortality in diabetics

A study conducted by researchers at Harvard University and published in Feb 2019 in the journal Circulation Research suggests that eating nuts, particularly tree nuts can help prevent cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and death from these diseases in diabetic patients.

The researchers analyzed data from 16,217 men and women with diabetes who were enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study during 1980 to 2014 and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study during 1986 and 2014, and found the link between nut consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease and death from the disease.

The study found that higher total nut consumption was correlated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality. Participants who ate 5 or more servings of nuts each week (28 grams per serving) were 17%, 20%, 34% and 31% less like to develop cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease and die from coronary heart disease and all causes, respectively, compared to those who ate less than 1 serving per week.

The total nut consumption was not significantly linked to lower risk of total cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and death risk from cardiovascular disease and cancer.  However, higher consumption of tree nuts was linked with lower risk of total cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease incidence and death risk from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all causes while eating peanuts was linked with lower all-cause death risk only.

Additionally, diabetics who started eating total nuts after diagnosis were 11% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease, 15% less likely to develop coronary heart disease, 25% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, and 27% less likely to die from all causes, compared to those who did not start eating nuts post-diagnosis.
