In the United States, 240,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and approximately 40,000 women die each year from the disease and/or its effects. The situation in China is similar. One thing women can do to reduce the risk of the disease is adequate sun exposure to maintain a normal serum vitamin D concentration.

For many reasons, vitamin D has been proven to prevent breast cancer and other malignant tumors. Vitamin D regulates cell differentiation and cell growth. The study also found that 1,25(OH)2D3 inhibited the proliferation of several human breast cancer cells in vitro.

In the study, exposing rats to carcinogens gave them breast tumors that respond to hormones. Then, the tumor-bearing rats were treated with 0.1 μg of 1α-hydroxyvitamin D 3 (vitamin D analog) three times a week. Tumor progression was significantly suppressed.
