Eating soy foods may prevent diabetes in women

A study published in Journal of Nutrition suggests that eating soy foods may decrease risk of type 2 diabetes in women, but not in men.

Japanese scientists conducted the study to see if there is any association between consumption of soy foods, soy protein and soy isoflavones and the risk for diabetes in the Japanese population.

They examined the data from a prospective cohort including 13,521 residents in Takayama City, Japan.  The soy foods considered in the study included soy foods, fried soy foods, nonfrieds soy foods, soy protein and soy isoflavones.

During a 10-year follow-up, women in the highest tertile of intake of all soy foods were at a significantly lower risk for type 2 diabetes.  The association was significant even after adjustment for other potential cofounders.

For instance, those who ate the highest amount of total soy foods were 55% less likely to develop diabetes than those who ate the lowest amount.

There was no association between soy consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes in Japanese men.

The study cannot confirm that eating soy foods can definitely prevent type 2 diabetes in women but the possibility exists.
