Exposure to CR scan radiation increases cancer risk

People who are exposed to ionizing radiation from diagnostic computed tomography scans or CT SCAN in childhood and adolescents have to face a high cancer risk later in life, according to an Australian study published in 2013 in BMJ.

Researchers analyzed data from 10.9 million people identified from Australian Medicare records age 0 to 19 years who were exposed CT Scans.

The researchers found that those who were exposed to a CT scan were 24% more likely than those who did not to develop cancer.  Each additional exposure increased cancer risk by 16%.

Exposure at a younger age was associated with a higher cancer risk.  The highest increase was 35%.

The types of cancers that are commonly linked to exposure to CT Scans include cancers of digestive organs, soft tissue cancer, melanoma, female genital cancer, urinary tract cancer, brain cancer and thyroid cancer, leukemia, myelodysplasia and other lymphoid cancers.
