Beetroot juice increases effectiveness of breast cancer drug

Drinking beetroot juice not only helps reduce the irreversible cardiotoxicity of the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin on healthy cells, but also increases the efficacy of the drug in vitro on breast cancer cells, a new study shows.

Previous studies have shown that high in nitrates and antioxidants, beet juice can help prevent the development of cancer (or act as a chemo-preventive agent).

In this study, adult rat cardiomyocytes and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells were treated with beetroot juice at doses of 0.5, 5, 50, 250 and 500 μg per ml. Some cells were also treated with doxorubicin.

Decreased death in cardiomyocytes but increased in breast cancer cells after co-treatment with beetroot juice and doxorubicin for 24 hours.

Adjuvant therapy reduces the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in healthy cardiomyocytes and increases ROS in breast cancer cells.

Adjuvant therapy also significantly reduced cell viability in breast cancer cells. Beetroot juice increases doxorubicin-induced apoptosis in breast cancer cells.

The study concluded: “Low concentrations of BRJ (beet juice) with DOX (doxorubicin) represent the most effective combination of cardio- and chemoprevention.”

“These findings provide insight into the possible cardioprotective capabilities of the BRJ in cancer patients treated with anthracycline chemotherapy.”

Early research also suggests that beetroot juice may also help protect against pancreatic and prostate cancer.

Together, previous studies have shown that beetroot and carrot juice can help fight chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
