Some people might hear of amygdalin as an alternative cancer treatment.  There are many successful stories.  However, no government or conventional medical circle recognizes amygdalin as an effective cancer treatment.

A recent review of reported experimental studies indicates that amygdalin which is a cyanogenic glycoside is actually effective at fighting cancer by inducing apoptosis and promoting arrest of cell cycle in G0/G1 phase.

The review is based on data from all major scientific databases including PubMed, science direct, Google scholar, Scopus and Medline.   Keywords used for the search include amygdalin, apoptosis, laetrile, vitamin B-17, pro-apoptotic proteins, anti-apoptotic proteins, and hydrogen cyanide.

The data shows that amygdalin stimulates apoptosis by up-regulating expression of Bax (proapoptotic protein) and caspase-3 and down regulating Bcl-2, which is an anti-apoptotic protein.  So amygdalin can kill cancer cells.

The review also shows that amygdalin does not render any cyanide toxicity. (Dr. Lu)
