Saturday March 7, 2018 (jkzx.com) —

Hair dyes linked to breast cancer

Hair dyes have been long suspected to be a cancer causing agent.  A new study conducted in Finland confirms the danger that exposure to hair dyes can increase risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Sanna Heikkinen of the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Cancer Registry, examined data from 8,000 Finnish women with breast cancer and 20,000 controls without the disease to see if there is an association between exposure to hair dyes and risk of breast cancer。

Heikkinen found hair dyes are indeed linked to breast cancer risk.  To be exact, she found that women who dyed their hair regularly were 23 percent more likely to develop breast cancer.

This is not the first study that linked exposure to hair dyes to an elevated risk of breast cancer.  Previous studies have already found women who dye their hair on a regular basis are at higher risk of many cancers including brain cancer, bladder cancer and leukemia in addition to breast cancer.

British doctors have already warned in the past about the hazards of both home hair dye kits and dyes used at hair salons.

In 2000, researchers from the University of Southern California in the International Journal of Cancer reported that women who dye their hair monthly were twice as likely as others who did not dye hair to get bladder cancer.

The longer the exposure, the higher the risk is.  For that reason, hairdressers who use hair dyes daily are at much greater risk of breast cancer and other cancers.

The European Commission reviewed the safety of hair dyes and has decided to withdraw support for hair coloring products in Europe.  The Commission stated that no sufficient evidence proves the safety of hair dyes.  One chemical called para-phenylenediamine or PPD particularly found in common hair dyes got the Commission attention.
