Monday 03/29/2021 (jkzx.com) — A new study published in the Journal of Nutrition March 2021 suggests that eating foods and living a lifestyle that can promote chronic inflammation can increase risk of all-cause mortality, cancer-induced mortality, and cardiovascular disease mortality. In comparison, inflammative lifestyle can be more detrimental than dietary inflammative foods.

The study finds that people who use inflammation inducing foods were at 10% higher death risk from all causes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease, compared to those who did not eat much of inflammative foods. And those who followed an inflammation-promoting lifestyle were at 70% higher risk, compared to those who did not follow the harmful lifestyle.

Foods that tend to cause or induce inflammation include red meats, processed meats, animal organ meats, trans fat/some vegetable oils, sugar-sweetened beverages, refined grains such as white rice and bread and noodles.

Components of lifestyle that induce inflammation include smoking. drinking alcohol, overweight/obesity, lack of moderate physical activity, and sleep deficiency.

The current study involves 33,155 women ages 55–69 years who were enrolled in the Iowa Women’s Health Study. Researchers estimated inflammation scores (dietary inflammation score and lifestyle induced inflammation score) based on 19 foods and 4-lifestyle components (drinking, smoking, body mass index and physical activity) for each subject.

These scores have been associated with circulation biomarkers of inflammation in previous studies. But the current study establishes a direct link between the inflammation scores and risk of death from all causes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

The study shows that subjects with higher dietary inflammation scores are 10% higher risk of dying from all causes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Those who have a high lifestyle inflammation score are 50 to 80% more likely to die from all causes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases.

For subjects with both high dietary and lifestyle inflammation scores, their risk of dying from all causes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases are 90% higher, compared to those who have a lower inflammation score.

This study study suggests that a person’s diet and lifestyle can influence his risk of death from all causes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases drastically.
