EGCG, the main active compound in green tea, is a powerful antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent.  Free radicals are highly reactive particles, and too many free radicals lead to oxidative stress and causes damage to cells.  As an antioxidant, EGCG improves fat metabolism, protects cells against oxidation, and inhibits inflammatory factors produced in the body.  Thus, this antioxidant can reduce risk of a variety of chronic diseases caused by oxidative stress and inflammation, including cancer, diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
