One new way to destroy animals’ fertility, which could be soon applied to humans is to use a gene therapy or vaccine-like shots. A new study of such a gene herapy has been successfully tested in cats.
The gene is a hormone gene inserted into an adeno-associated virus which is commonly used as a vector to get the gene via a vaccine shot into the host’s DNA, in this case, cat’ cells.
Researchers say that they do not know how the gene therapy works, but there have been no pregnancies in female cats during two years of observation.
One possibility is that gene therapy gets rid of some sexual hormone because of which the felines studied refused to mate.
This gene and the virus when mixed into a common vaccine could potentially eliminate people’s fertility.
